Carson City Mint (CC)

  • Established: 1870
  • Location: Carson City, Nevada
  • Purpose: Primarily produced silver coins due to proximity to the Comstock Lode, a significant silver deposit.
  • Operation: Limited; ceased operations in 1893.
  • Notable Coins: Famous for Morgan silver dollars and other coins with a “CC” mintmark.

Philadelphia Mint (P)

  • Established: 1792
  • Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Purpose: The first U.S. Mint and main facility for coin production, often referred to as the "mother mint."

  • Notable Coins: Known for proof sets and a wide range of circulation coins.

New Orleans Mint (O)

Charlotte Mint (C):

  • Established: 1837
  • Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
  • Purpose: Built to process gold from the Carolina Gold Rush and mint gold coins.
  • Operation: Closed in 1861 during the Civil War; later repurposed as a Confederate headquarters and eventually demolished.
  • Notable Coins: Produced gold coins with the “C” mintmark, including $1, $2.50, and $5 coins.
